Our Journeys to work
Last week Kieron walked with Maria to his car and watched her going home in the opposite direction. He realised what an incredible commute she had in comparison to most people. It then clicked that a lot of us at Brocante have interesting journeys, probably in part due to living in Cornwall, where we don’t have the best public transport.
Hence we thought we would share some of our journeys to work on this blog. First up is Maria, who comes by ferry!
Sometimes she walks, cycles, or on a lazy day, drives, to the ferry in Bodinnick, whichever way you go there is no escaping the huge hill (perhaps the ambulance in the photo is there to help Maria at the top of the hill with gas and air). Then it is a short 2 minute journey across the water to Fowey, followed by a 5 minute walk to Brocante. It is a fairly expensive 2 minute journey at £9 for a return car journey or £4 for foot passengers.
In the winter the ferry runs from 7am until 7pm, and if you miss it, or the weather turns, then the drive around is nearly 40 minutes! In the summer it finishes a little later, so is not too much of a rush after a busy day.
Usually the journey is fairly uneventful, however Maria remembers being sent home early from school because the ferry was closing early due to stormy weather, having a very exciting rough crossing and missing maths on a Wednesday afternoon was a real winner. Luckily this doesn’t seem to have happened on a work day!
Fun fact: the blue house in the image below, Ferryside, was where the famous Cornish author Daphne du Maurier wrote more than one of her novels.
